Ballers kick off season with a W

The Green Dot Ballers opened their 2020 Winter campaign demonstrating the style of play this franchise has been founded upon, featuring multiple offensive threats, strong defense and a high percentage of assisted baskets. All of those were featured in a resounding 56-37 victory Thursday night over the Bullets at Francis Hammond Middle School.

The Ballers jumped out to an early 14-7 lead as multiple players found their way onto the scoresheet with baskets, assists or both. The Bullets then fought back with an 8-0 run to take a 15-14 lead and prompt a Ballers timeout. The run was possible due to an 0-12 drought on the offensive end for GDB as they tried to shake off the winter break rust. Whatever was said in the huddle apparently resonated, as the Ballers blitzed the Bullets with a barrage of baskets to streak into the break 18-2 and establish a grip on the game that would not be relinquished.

Kyle Welty stretches to snare the ball before scoring in transition to kick off an 18-2 run.

Newcomer Kyle Welty started the key sequence of the game with a steal at mid-court and converted a transition basket to take back the lead. The run also featured a jumper and a step-back 3 from Welty as he made his presence felt with his new teammates. The Baller Co-Captains then got in on the fun with Chris Larson (game high 8 assists) pilfering one of his five steals and turning it into a breakaway basket and Mike Reamy (15 points) drilling a pair of three pointers to send the Ballers to the break with a commanding 32-17 lead.

Another cold spell to start the second half (0-12 again!) translated to a seven minute drought before Green Dot would score again. As he did in the first half, it was Welty breaking through with a three pointer and then making way for Logan Seacrist to go to work. Seacrist showed off a full arsenal of talent with a series of inside moves, a reverse, a couple of assists and then a three pointer of his own. When the dust settled, the Baller Big man had a game high 19 points and the Ballers were 1-0 to start the season.

GDB heads into week 2 of the season to face off with old nemesis Grant Thornton in a game that will determine early season positioning for both squads.

Logan Seacrist hits the three pointer on his way to a game high 19 points.
