Ballers scare off Monstars in a tightly contested matchup

As the winter session begins to sort out pretenders from contenders, the Monstars went searching for a marquee win to pair with their opening week victory over Durangos. The Monstars typically find themselves on the short end of tiebreakers, just good enough to beat the bottom half of the league, but not quite good enough to join the elite. While they gave the #2 Ballers a run for their money, they ultimately came up short of grabbing a key victory, falling to the Green Dot Ballers 53-37.

In closely played game that would not see a team lead by double digits, the first half would feature a wrestling match for control of the game. GDB would take a 14-8 lead at the nine minute mark, only to see the Monstars respond with a 12-2 run of their own. The Monstars had a chance to seize control when they were fouled on a three pointer with 1 minute remaining in the half, but all three free throws were missed and the Ballers combined a Kyle Welty basket with a Chris Harris 3 pointer and a Will Harris putback at the buzzer to sneak into the break with a 23-20 lead.

Chris Harris (55) scores and gets fouled on his way to 11 first half points.

That last minute run would be a calling card of the balanced offense on the night for the Ballers. Chris Harris would lead the way with 13 points, but 7 of the 8 Ballers would score at least two baskets. Whenever GDB needed a key basket, the next player was ready to step up. Logan Seacrist was prominent in the key second half run that finally wrested control of the game. He played his own game of "around the world" with four baskets from various spots throughout the key.

Kyle Welty, who was the leading scorer through the first three games, took on a role as distributor in this one, with a team leading seven assists. The Ballers offense was highly efficient inside the three point line hitting on 17 of their 25 shots and assisting on 18 of 23 baskets overall. The win helps the Ballers keep pace with Joy Boys with the end of the first half of the season approaching next week.
