This week kicked off the second half of the season and the Joy Boys and Green Dot look primed for a week 8 showdown to determine the #1 seed. Time to start our weekly look around the league and see what might play out.
Elite Rivals
#1 Joy Boys (5-0) - The defending Fall champs trying to become the first team to hold multiple titles at the same time since the Green Dot Ballers held the Fall and Winter titles in 2017-2018. They have carried over their stellar fall performance by featuring the league leading offense at almost 70 points per game. A showdown with the Ballers will likely determine who wins the regular season title.
#2 Green Dot Ballers (6-0) - The Ballers are doing things on the defensive end with a league leading effort, surrendering just under 43 points per game. Newcomer Kyle Welty has given the offense a boost in diversity that it has been missing since the departure of Colt Street. As noted above, a week 8 showdown with Joy Boys will determine who win the #1 seed.
Challengers
#3 Beat Durangos (2-1) Newcomers Beat Durangos, named due to their rivalry with Durangos that plays out on local blacktops in Alexandria, have proven to be a worthy competitor in their inaugural season. Featuring a core of players that have played on other teams in previous seasons, this group is looking to crash the party. Wins over G-Men and Durangos has them off to a strong start. Can they sustain the performance going forward? If so, a playoff spot is well within their grasp. Back to back games with the Joy Boys in the final two weeks may dictate their playoff fate.
#4 G-Men (3-3) G-Men ran up 71 points against Monstars in a key victory for playoff positioning. The perennial challengers have a key game vs. Green Dot Ballers. A win, likely positions them for a playoff spot, but a fourth loss would be very challenging to their tiebreaker scenarios.
#5 Monstars (2-2) Monstars loss to G-Men last week starts to put pressure on the Monstars ever elusive path to the playoffs. As a team who frequently loses tie-breakers, the G-Men loss puts them behind the eight ball again and likely has them on the outside looking in.
#6 Durangos (2-4) - Time is running short for the defending winter league champs. An unusual inability to win the close games this season is proving to be the difference. Losses to Monstars, Green Dot and Beat Durangos were by a combined 11 points. Durangos will need to run the table to earn their chance to defend the title. A regular season finale matchup against Monstars likely serves as a play-in game.
Back of the Pack
#7 Bullets (2-3) - A forfeit loss against otherwise winless Grant Thornton is looming large for the Bullets chances for a playoff spot. They will have to earn their way in or resort to playing the spoiler role down the stretch.
#8 Grant Thornton (1-4) - The glory days are gone for Grant Thornton. An ill-fated re-boot of this franchise after a year off has not lived up to the high flying squads of previous years. Their anemic offense is generating just 42 points per game, which is simply not enough to make any traction in this league.
#9 Only One Can Dunk (0-5) - Expansion teams are wise to make sure they have enough scoring to hang with teams in the City of Alexandria League. Unfortunately for OOCD, they are averaging a measly 30.8 points per game and losing by an average of almost 28 point per game.
Game to watch this week -
2/25 Green Dot Ballers vs. G-Men - G-Men try to salvage their season against long time tormenters Green Dot. Ballers try to avoid tripping up in a trap game with the Joy Boys just around the corner.
Standings Key
Green means a win, Red means a loss, yellow is the game this week.
There are 10 games and 11 opponents for each team, so the column to the right is the team that is missed in the rotation.
